Behavior Style

Understanding behavior style is the foundation for building more effective communication, reduced tension and ultimately more productive work relationships. Developing the ability to work effectively with other people requires an understanding of Behavior Style. With this understanding, you can determine your impact on other people, learn how they respond to you and how you perceive them. An individual's behavior tends to be predictable. You talk, gesture, choose words, make decisions, solve problems, face challenges and interact with others in consistent ways which form your behavior patterns or "Style." Much of the conflict you experience with other people is due to a collision of Behavior Style. Most "difficult" people you experience are actually just "different" or opposite of you in "Behavior Style."

The Effectiveness Institute Behavior Style profile has four quadrants.

Each Behavior Style or style combination has unique strengths and blindspots, not that any one style is "best." Comparing and contrasting Behavior Styles should only be done for the purpose of understanding how the styles are different, and what can be done to create more effective communication and interaction between the different styles.

The major points of differentiation of Behavior Style are illustrated in four "lines" or preferences of behavior. They are:

  1. The way in which people make decisions.
  2. The need or lack of need for quality, accuracy and perfection.
  3. The preference for either a dynamic ever-changing environment or a stable environment.
  4. The tendency to be socially cautious or socially assertive.

With our Behavior Style Profile and tools, you can learn to understand how each style is different in these four ares and what that means as it relates to you, your colleagues, supervisors, and customers.

The Effectiveness Institute offers a series of workshops and training tools to learn how to communicate, manage, lead, influence and sell to each of the different Behavior Styles and Behavior Style combinations. Visit our website for Online Behavior Style Profiles and Tools.
